Benchmark Community Bank: With you for Life!
Since 1971
Fifty years ago, a group of Lunenburg County businessmen consisting of store owners, farmers, and retired residents went on a fishing trip. Conversation on that trip capped months of discussion about the need for a community-owned bank to serve the people of Lunenburg County. In February 1971, they gathered at Slaw’s Restaurant in Blackstone to discuss formation of the new financial institution and The Lunenburg County Bank was born.
The bank opened on September 8, 1971 in a white modular unit – doublewide – on Broad Street in downtown Kenbridge. There was so much excitement! The bank has grown to serving over 46,000 people in 17 locations in Southside Virginia and northern North Carolina and with almost $1 billion in assets. Frankly, we thought you might like to hear the story from the people who lived it.
So, grab some popcorn, something to drink, and a comfy chair as we present the Benchmark Community Bank story – With you for Life!
